How to negotiate a job offer

Be enthusiastic, be specific, and ask once.

6 min read

Many employers expect some negotiation, and a polite, well-reasoned request rarely costs anyone an offer. The key is staying positive and specific.

Steps

  1. Thank them and say you're excited about the role
  2. Ask for the offer in writing, and for time to review it
  3. Compare it with your market range and your other options
  4. Make one clear counter with a specific number and a short reason
  5. Be ready to negotiate other parts of the package if salary is fixed

Avoid

  • Inventing competing offers
  • Accepting on the spot before seeing the full package
  • Negotiating again after you've accepted
