Before the conversation
Asking for a meeting
I'd like to set up 30 minutes to talk about my role and compensation. Would sometime next week work?
The hardest part of asking for more is often the first sentence. Borrow these, fill in the brackets with your own facts, and say them out loud a few times before the real conversation. Keep your tone friendly and your number specific.
Before the conversation
I'd like to set up 30 minutes to talk about my role and compensation. Would sometime next week work?
In the meeting
Over the past year I've [taken on X / delivered Y result]. I've also looked at market pay for this role in our area, which is around [range].
Based on that, I'd like to discuss moving my salary to [specific number].
Handling a no
I understand. What would I need to show to earn this raise, and can we agree to revisit it on [date]?
In the meantime, is there flexibility on [title / training / schedule / a review in six months]?
Before you counter
Thank you, I'm really excited about this role. Could you send the full offer in writing? I'd like a couple of days to review it, and I'll get back to you by [day].
One clear counter
I'm excited to join. Based on my experience with [skill] and market pay for this role, I was hoping for a base salary of [number]. Is there flexibility there?
Asking for more than salary
I understand the salary range is set. Would it be possible to look at [a sign-on bonus / extra time off / a pay review after six months / a later start date]?
Redirecting to your target
I'd prefer to focus on this role. Based on my research, I'm looking for something in the range of [range]. Does that fit your budget for the position?
After any agreement
Thanks for meeting today. To confirm, we agreed [the change] starting [date]. I appreciate your support.
