Guides / Ask for a raise

The raise conversation, step by step

A clear ask, three reasons, then stop talking.

6 min read

The conversation itself can be short. What matters is a specific number and a case built on your results and the market, not on personal needs.

The structure

  1. Ask for a meeting about your pay, so it isn't a surprise
  2. Open with what you've contributed and want to keep contributing
  3. Give your three strongest points: results, added responsibility, market pay
  4. Ask for a specific number
  5. Pause and let your manager respond
  6. Agree on next steps and a date

Keep it about the work

Rent, childcare and other costs are real, but they aren't why an employer pays more. Focus on the value of your work and what the market pays for it.
