When to ask for a raise

Before budgets are set, and after a clear win.

4 min read

Timing affects how easy it is for your manager to say yes. Raises are often decided well before the review meeting.

Good moments

  • A month or two before budgets or reviews are finalized; ask your manager when that is
  • After a clear success, while it's fresh
  • When your role has grown beyond your job description
  • When you have a market range showing you're paid below it

Harder moments

  • During layoffs or a hiring freeze
  • Right after a mistake or a tough quarter
  • In a hallway or by surprise; ask for a meeting instead
