Guides / Ask for a raise

If they say no, or not yet

Turn a no into a plan with a date.

4 min read

A no isn't always the end. Often it means "not now" or "not this much". What you do next matters.

Ask these questions

  • "What would I need to show to earn this raise?"
  • "Can we agree to revisit this on a specific date?"
  • "Is there flexibility in something else, like title, training or schedule?"

Then

  • Put what was agreed in a short follow-up email
  • Track progress against what was asked
  • If the answer stays no, it's fair to look at what other employers pay
