Changing jobs for higher pay
Sometimes the biggest raise comes from a new employer.
People who change jobs often see bigger pay increases than those who stay. But a move has costs and risks too, so compare carefully.
Before you move
- Compare total compensation, not just salary
- Check vesting: unvested retirement match or bonuses you'd leave behind
- Think about health coverage gaps between jobs
- Consider asking your current employer first, if you'd really prefer to stay
Counteroffers
If your employer makes a counteroffer, ask yourself whether pay was the only reason you looked. If not, the other reasons will still be there.
