Inflation and your "real" raise

A 3% raise with 3% inflation leaves you where you were.

4 min read

When prices rise, the same salary buys less. To see whether you're really getting ahead, compare your raise with inflation.

The quick math

Your raise percentage minus the inflation rate is roughly your real raise. A 4% raise with 3% inflation is about a 1% real raise.

Where to check inflation

The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the Consumer Price Index (CPI) every month at bls.gov.

Use it in your case

Inflation alone rarely wins a raise, but market pay data often reflects it. Lead with your results and market range.
